Hangzhou International School Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary

On October 13, Hangzhou International School (HIS) celebrated its 10-year anniversary. This was an exciting event for the almost 900 attendees including parents, students, teachers, administrators and media personnel, who joined together to celebrate a decade of success.Hangzhou School

HIS has developed and grown tremendously from a campus serving only 13 students during the 2002-2003 school year to today's international school with more than 360 students. The amazing growth can be attributed to the dedication and ongoing investment in the school's mission by the passionate students, faculty, staff, parents, and Board of Directors.

The celebration started with visitors greeted by students from different grade levels who presented each visitor with a commemorative gift. Visitors were then directed to the school auditorium for a slideshow of the school's and the surrounding area's past 10 years of development. Following the slideshow, visitors were encouraged to drop an artifact representing this day in history into the time capsule box that will be reopened in the year 2027 at the school's 25th anniversary.

At 10 am, with Mr. Evan Weinberg as the Master of Ceremonies, the event started with an opening speech from Mr. Larry Balli, one of the founders of the school organization. Other speeches followed, including one from the Principal of the neighboring local school, Mr. Ye Cui Wei, followed by Mr. Jeffry Stubbs, the Superintendent of SCIS-HIS schools, Mr. Robert Vander Eyken, HIS Head of School and Mrs. Francis Spiekerman, HIS PAFA President.

The attendees were then entertained by music performances from lower school students led by HIS music teachers Mrs. Liz Hah and Mr. Rob Grice. In addition, a Chinese opera "face change" performance as well as Lion and Dragon dances were enjoyed by all in attendance, but especially by the children. Finally, perhaps Hangzhou's biggest cake ever made a grand entrance and was distributed to members of the audience. This gigantic cake was made up of 420 cupcakes in the shape of the school logo.

After the speeches and performances, attendees were invited to enjoy a delicious international buffet lunch while listening to HIS students playing piano. The event also included bouncy castles, face painting, sugar art, clown balloon magic, cotton candy and popcorn. All were particularly popular with the younger celebrants. There was also a photo setup for families to take a souvenir photograph with the HIS Golden Dragon mascot. Finally, all could sign a giant banner to leave behind their mark on this fantastic celebration.

To inaugurate the new soccer field, Mrs. Jannet Molina coordinated over 150 lower school children from 2-6 years of age performing a rhythm and movement choreography. The Varsity Soccer squads including boys and girls, coached by Mr. Dan Rooth, challenged an All-Star team composed of parents, teachers and even the Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Jeffry Stubbs! The game ended in an exciting 2-2 draw.

The anniversary event concluded with special guest appearances by the HIS "Clandestine Rock Stars" composed of HIS Upper School students followed by local Hangzhou classic rock band "The Shaker Maker." Young and old alike enjoyed the music, and danced away the rest of the afternoon.

The event ended in the afternoon with many more happy memories from this momentous day to join those of the past ten years of learning and fun at HIS. Happy anniversary, Hangzhou International School!
